WORKPLACES WILL NEED TO HAVE A STRATEGY TO KEEP BUSINESSES OPEN AND EMPLOYEES SAFE

Many Companies with Comprehensive COVID-19 Plans use clear metrics, real-time data, to get clear visibility on the number of cases and suspected cases in their workforce. By using this real time data and acting quickly companies are able to be more proactive in their response to COVID-19.

Until there is a vaccine, preventing Covid-19 outbreaks will depend mostly on testing, isolation and tracing the contacts of people who test positive. Workplace testing would catch the disease where it spreads,”
Scott Gottlieb, Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner

“If every person, including people with no symptoms, could be tested regularly, it would make a huge difference in how we are all fighting this virus. Those who test positive could be quarantined and cared for, and everyone who tests negative could re-enter the economy with confidence.” Amazon

Transform the Safety of your Workplace by Implementing the 4 Keys to Success.

Implement social distancing, hygiene and sanitization strategies in order to reduce infection and death rates.

Minimize Potential Employee Exposure
  • Leverage Personal Protective Equipment – Face masks, face shields, gloves and protective clothing
  • Design office and retail space to minimize contact within social distance guidelines
    • Walking lanes, stairwell direction, elevator capacity
    • Protective plastic/glass partitions
    • Room/meeting capacity Utilize communications technology to reduce face to face interactions
Sanitization
  • Increase frequency of cleaning/sanitization
  • Update equipment and cleaning materials to combat virus
  • Create guidelines for employees to clean work, meeting and personal space before and after each use

COVID-19 PCR Virus Test

The need for COVID-19 RT-PCR testing is urgent now in order to identify people who are infected and actively spreading the virus.

High sensitivity: Rapid detection is crucial for rapid response to help isolate and contact trace.

  • Sensitivity target of 100% for SARS-CoV-2
  • Positive results are indicative of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA
  • A multiplex real-time RT-PCR test for the qualitative detection of RNA from SARS-CoV-2 in upper respiratory specimens

High specificity: Test is reliable for identifying specific SARS-CoV-2 virus

  • Specificity target of 100% for SARS-CoV-2
  • Detects the pathogen itself by identifying its RNA
  • Targets regions of three coronavirus genes which are specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus

(ILab has another video on testing that can go here).

COVID-19 Antibody Testing

According to the Center of Disease Control, up to 81% of infected people could be asymptomatic or have mild to moderate symptoms.

Serology testing for SARS-CoV-2 is at increased demand in order to better quantify the number of cases of COVID-19. Beckman Coulter Antibody Testing Video Series: Serology Testing and Immunity with Dr. Shamiram Feinglass MD, MPH Chief Medical Officer Beckman Coulter.

COVID-19 in the Workplace

The test can play a critical role in the fight against COVID-19 in the workplace by:

  • Identifying COVID-19 exposed persons who have very little symptoms or are below the PCR virus test detection limit
  • Detecting those persons who may have been exposed to COVID-19 and have developed a degree of immunity

High Sensitivity and Specificity

  • Access SARS-CoV-2 IgG has 100% sensitivity and 99.8% specificity—one of the highest combined rates for SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests in the market.
  • Access SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay detects antibodies against the virus spike protein that may be more likely to confer immunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Access SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay can be used 14–20 days after the infection. However, the time it takes could vary from individual to individual, virus to virus, and assay to assay.
The purpose of the Access SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay is to determine if a patient was exposed to COVID-19 and has potentially developed an immune reaction to SARS-CoV-2. The recommended method to diagnose a COVID-19 infection is a molecular diagnostic PCR test based on the detection of the virus RNA, like the one recently developed by another Danaher company, Cepheid. Antibody assays play a critical role in:
- tracking the spread of the virus
- identifying individuals that have recovered from COVID-19 infection
- potentially identifying individuals no longer susceptible to the virus who can return to work
- identifying individuals who may donate a part of their blood called convalescent plasma, which may serve as a possible treatment for those seriously ill
- identifying those who require a vaccine once available
Upon contracting any virus, one of the body’s defense mechanisms is to produce antibodies called immunoglobulin M (IgM), followed within approximately a week by the production of antibodies called immunoglobulin G (IgG). These antibodies are very specific for viral proteins, and their role is to help the body eliminate the virus.
